688 $a Jesús Rafael Soto was born in Ciudad Bolívar in Venezuela. Between 1942 and 1947 he studied at the Academia Bellas Artes in Caracas. In the period from 1947 to 1950 he was director of the Maracaibo School of Fine Arts in Venezuela. From the 1950s he was active in Paris where he intensified his creative work and became renowned both with connoisseurs and the general public through exhibitions held from the 1950s to the 1970s (Galerie Denis René in Paris, David Zwirner Gallery in New York, Galerie Brusberg in Berlin, Muzeum Haus Lange in Krefeld, Galerie Schmela in Berlin, Kunsthalle Bern, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels). Jesús Rafael Soto was an important exponent of kinetic art. The main subject of this movement is kineticism invoked by optical phenomena, movement of the artist or the observer of the work. In his works Soto used the effect of repetitive layering applied to geometric shapes resulting in an illusory effect on the viewers. Jesús Rafael Soto died on 17 January 2005 in Paris.
